Lagos police officer arrested for killing tricycle operator

A Lagos state police official, Corporal Abbey Adekunle, was arrested for the alleged murder of a tricycle operator on Wednesday, reports have said.

Police authorities reported that Adekunle, who is attached to the Meiran Police station, shot and killed the deceased, a Dele Oroja, in front of the police station at about 10:20 p.m. while he was on duty.

Lagos state police commissioner, Umaru Manko was said to have ordered the immediate arrest of the offending officer.

In a statement signed by police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, the police revealed that Oroja did not die immediately, but was rushed to a nearby hospital. Efforts were made to save his life, but Oroja was pronounced dead later that night.

“The corpse has been deposited at the General Hospital, Ikeja, for post mortem examination, while the suspect is under arrest and currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba,” Braide said.

It is not clear what led to the murder, but police are still investigating the crime committed by one of their own. The police spokeswoman urged for calm in the community and asked that they allow the police investigate the matter.
