Maldivan court orders 100 lashes and 8 months house arrest for teen girl who had sex

A Maldivan court has sentenced a 16-year-old girl to eight months’ house arrest and 100 lashes after she was convicted for having sex with a 29-year-old man, reports have said.

According to the report, cited by the Daily Mail, the girl “confessed” to the relationship after her family pressed charges. The man accused of having sex with a minor has been sentenced to 10 years in jail, Minivan news reports.

While the man involved is headed off to jail to serve his punishment right away, the report reveals the girl would be flogged only when she reaches adulthood.

“As she is legally a minor, the court stated that the girl’s sentence would be implemented when she turned 18,” Minivan News said.

It was not immediately clear when the couple had sex, according to the Daily Mail.

Only 10 months ago, the UN Human Rights chief Navi Pillay urged that the Maldives, better known for being a luxury tourist destination, stop publicly flogging women for having extra-marital sex.

Flogging is normally handed down as a punishment by village chiefs who also act as local judges. A cane is used.
