A police sergeant and two civilians were killed when gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect stormed the the Marte LGA in Borno State. They arrived New Marte in three sedans and eight motorcycles and opened fire, prompting residents to flee.
One witness told newsmen on the phone that the assailants engaged security operatives in a four-hour long gun battle. He said the security agents ran out of ammunition and called for reinforcement from the Monguno military barracks, but they came too late. The witness said network and communication problems hindered security operatives, while terrorists fled the scene.
The gunmen continued on their terror trail, setting fire to the Divisional Police Headquarters, Cocin Church and the residence of the Unit Commandant of the Army, reports said. Five vehicles on the premises of the police station were burnt.
The Borno State capital city of Maiduguri also witnessed more bloodshed on Saturday when two persons were killed in the Ummarari and Gwange wards. Vanguard reported that some suspected terrorists had trailed one of the victims to his home in the Ummarari ward at about 7:30 p.m. where they shot him twice in the head, killing him immediately.
The attack at Gwange, Vanguard reported, happened on Saturday night when gunmen murdered a victim who had only returned from a trip to Kaduna. He was killed in their family ohm at Layin Bridge of the Gwange area.
A security officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the series of murders and so far no arrests have been made in connection to any of the murders.
