Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reported yet another bizarre arrest over the weekend. The NDLEA arrested Mr. Vincent Chegini Chinweuwa at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos over the weekend when he was caught attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country hidden in a roasted chicken.
They reported that Chinweuwa hid 2.655kg of the hard narcotics, worth N24 million, in the tasty meal, hoping to throw the anti-drug trafficking agency off his scent. NDLEA chairman Ahmadu Giade said the suspect, a passenger on an incoming Turkish Airline flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was mistaken in thinking his method of concealment was perfect.
“Several drugs cleverly hidden by drug barons have been discovered and we shall continue to detect drugs regardless of the mode of concealment,” Giade said, adding that the suspect, an Imo state resident, would be charged in court.
The airport commander for the agency, Mr. Hamza Umar, said the suspect has been forthcoming during investigation.
“We discovered 2.655kg of cocaine hidden inside roasted chicken. It is a remarkable seizure because no one would have imagined cocaine worth several millions inside roasted chicken” Hamza stated.
Chinweuwa expressed surprise at even being caught in the first place.
“It took me three days to pack the cocaine inside the roasted chicken. I was confident that the drug will not be detected. I have been living in Brazil since 2006. Life has been stressful because I cannot even visit my wife in Nigeria due to lack of money. I wanted some money to start any business of my choice back home. Unfortunately, I was disappointed upon arrival in Lagos”, Chinweuwa lamented.
