A Bayelsa man reportedly committed suicide in the capital city of Yenagoa on Saturday, shortly after securing a government road contract worth N200m.
The middle-aged man, identified as Tari, hails from the Sagbama local government area and had just graduated the University of Port Harcourt. The multimillion naira contract he secured was to build the Igbedi-Amassoma link road.
The man reportedly took his own life at his residence in the Civil Servant Estate. He was found writhing in pain by close relatives on Friday when he was believed to have consumed a poisonous mixture.
A source, according to the Vanguard, said the deceased was rushed to the hospital and all efforts were made to save his life. He was later rushed to Church when his condition continued to worsen.
His mother, a retired civil servant, is shocked by the sudden demise of her son and other close friends believe he might have been murdered. They claim in the last few days of his life the deceased had received threatening phone calls to his mobile phone.
They claim the mysterious callers threatened the deceased over an undisclosed deal, the Vanguard reported.
Police spokesman, DSP Fidelis Odunnwa, said there is no official report on the incident, but assured that investigations are ongoing.
