About 30 families were rendered homeless in Lagos on Tuesday when a three-story building collapsed in the Adeniji Adele area of the commercial city.

It is unclear how many were killed in the tragic accident. However, managing director of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Oke- Osanyintolu, said there were no casualties, but added that some occupants of the building, including a 60-year-old woman, reportedly sustained injuries.

According to the Vanguard, the building collapsed at about 12:45 p.m. and was followed by a loud bang, which caused panic among residents in the area.

One of the occupants of the affected building blamed the incident on negligence on the part of the landlord. According to the resident, named Areo, officials from the Lagos state secretariat in Alausa had visited the building and advised the landlord to renovate the building, which he promised to do.

“He even collected two years rent from us to carry out the renovation. But he never did it,” he said.

“I really do not know what would have become of me. I only went out to buy something and by the time I came back, the building had caved in. I have lost everything.”

The rescue efforts, by a combined team of police officers, LASEMA officials, NEMA and Civil Defense, took hours.

NEMA spokesman, Ibrahim Farinloye said occupants of the affected building were evacuated and assisted to retrieve their belongings. They also plan to demolish the next building as well to avoid any problems in the future.
