Torrential rains in a northeastern city in Nigeria has displaced over 10,000 residents from their homes and 500 corpses from their graves, a report said.

The Vanguard reported that the heavy rainfall, which lasted from Wednesday evening to the early hours of Thursday, not only destroyed property worth millions, but also caused damage to the Jajeri Moslem Cemetery in Maiduguri where over 500 dead bodies were washed up from their grave sites.

One of the affected graves was that of a 10-year-old boy who was buried on Wednesay.

It was, the report said, the heaviest downpour the Borno State capital has experienced this year.

Residents living in the Bullumkutu, Ajillari, Jajeri, London Ciki, Polo, Bolori, Ummarari, Maduganari, Gomari Airport, Gwange and Mary wards of the metropolis were severely affected by the torrential downpour.

Some were forced to stay indoors, while others yet were forced to evacuate flooded homes with any belongings they could salvage.

Residents say their proximity to River Gadambul makes the flooding situation more severe in their area and have called on Governor Shettima of Borno State to come to their aid.

For one woman, Hajiya Asabe Umara, living in the Bolori area, the heavy rains had medical implications.

Umara, who had carried her pregnancy to full term could not get to the hospital when she went into labour and was forced to give birth at home on Thursday morning.

“The massive flooding prevented any vehicle from coming to take me to a nearby hospital,” the mother of a new baby boy told the Vanguard.

Relief might be on the way soon as reports have revealed that Gov. Shettima has awarded contracts worth N14 billion for the construction of roads and drainages in the area.
