A late night explosion in Bauchi state has left nine injured, reports have said. Unknown assailants detonated an explosive device in an uncompleted building located in Bayan Gari, an area that is home to a few hotels, brothels and relaxation spots.
The explosion, according to the Daily Trust, occurred at about 10 p.m. on Sunday. The Bauchi State police commissioner confirmed the incident to reporters, describing the attackers and “hoodlums”.
“Nine people were injured and we have taken all injured people to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital,” the police boss said.
A security source said the injuries were not all caused by the blast, but some sustained injuries in the stampede that followed the loud explosive sounds.
“They panicked and were injured in the resulting stampede. There was nobody in the building where the bast occurred, but it is a place we raid often for Indian Hemp smokers,” the source said.
One witness, a guest at a nearby hotel described the panic that followed the explosion.
“The blast occurred near a hotel where we were dancing. We heard a loud sound explosion and the blast shattered the glasses of our cars. We all panicked before soldiers came to our rescue. I counted at least 10 injured people. We were all trapped but God saved us.”
