President Goodluck Jonathan fires NSA, Defence Minister

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday sacked his National Security Adviser and Defence Minister in one fell swoop.

The President’s spokesman, Reuben Abati, announced the shocking development via Twitter only minutes ago.

The President, who just returned from a summit in Brazil, had called an emergency security council meeting in the presidential villa only moments after he arrived in Nigeria. The closed door meeting was attended by Vice President Namadi Sambo, Minister of Defence, Mohammed Bello Haliru, as well as the ministers of Police Affairs, Interior and Foreign Affairs.

The closed door meeting began at about 3 p.m., according to reports, was summoned to discuss the pressing issue of the nation’s growing insecurity as continued Boko Haram violence claims more lives in the nation’s restive north.

Other details of what was said during the meeting are yet to be revealed. What we do know is what was revealed in Abati’s tweets. A new Defence Minister is yet to be announced.
