Now we can likely imagine darling doll couple, Barbie and Ken, in very many scenarios – from millionaire mansions to Ivy League schools – but a Nigerian traditional wedding is not one of those scenarios that come to mind. That is, of course, until London-based Nigerian photographer, Obi Nwokedi got inspired to create this amazing and unique photo shoot showing black Barbie and Ken in a traditional Yoruba wedding.
On his blog, the IT analyst turned talented photographer, said the idea for his shoot was inspired by a black Barbie glam shoot in Italian Vogue.
What was meant to be a simple two-week long photo project, however, soon morphed into something much more elaborate, taking five months to complete.
“I had to enlist my wife to help out with the outfits, as well as searching the internet for all the little accessories,” Obi wrote in his blog post. He published the photo series on his blog site on Wednesday and says he is glad to be done with the dolls.
“I was beginning to get weird looks from my son whenever I came home with a Barbie and he was asking if it was for me or for his baby sister,” he added.
Some photos from the shoot are below:
First few scenes portrayed in his series show the bride, surrounded by her bridal party, getting ready for her big day.
Then we see the dashing groom, Naija Ken. He looks a tad pensive, don’t you agree?
Then there is the big boogie. In true Nigerian style, there is the spraying of monies (foreign currency of course) on the dancing couple.
Also check out another Barbie/Ken photo shoot with a completely different vibe, which we spotted in the Daily Mail. Obi might have shown us a very happy couple, but Vancouver based photographer, Dina Goldstein, shows the famous couple in a loveless marriage with a tragic ending. See slide show below.
