Gunmen kill 3, steal LG salary in Borno

Three people were killed in Borno State on Wednesday when five suspected armed robbers attacked staff of the Guzamala Local Government office and carted away millions of naira meant for salary payments of LG employees.

Two police officers and a staff of the LGA were the victims of the robbery attack. According to the Vanguard report, the police officers escorted the staff of the finance department to a bank in the capital city of Maiduguri where they withdrew an unspecified amount of money.

They were intercepted on their return trip, however, along the Magumeri Gubio highway.

A staff member who spoke to the Vanguard put the time of the attack at about 2:30 p.m.

The source said: “They brandished sophisticated guns and shot the victims before they took away all the money that was withdrawn from the bank.”

Chairman of the local government said: “Nobody can say from where the gunmen came. The unfortunate thing had happened. Lives have been lost and colossal amount of money robbed.”

He said that top Borno state government and security officials have been briefed on the incident, adding that the bodies of the victims have been recovered for burial.
