Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang now has to look for a new place to live as he has obeyed orders that he vacate the newly renovated Governor’s Lodge and Office, located in Jishe, Jos.
According to the Punch, Jang moved out of the premises to honour the 23 March Supreme Court ruling that declared bordering Nasarawa state the owner of the property.
According to the reports, late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, brokered an assets sharing agreement during his reign in 1996 that stated that some properties, including the Governor’s House, be given to Nasarawa state, created by the Abacha administration on October 1, 1996
Jang had long ignored the agreement, choosing to renovate the building on the state’s budget and occupy the Government House. However, the apex court recently decided that the property belongs to Nasarawa.
Justice John Fabiyi, in his ruling, said it was wrong for Plateau state to refuse to abide by a valid agreement it willingly entered.
Both military administrators of Plateau and Nasarawa states, Col. Habibu Shuaibu and Wing Commander Abdullahi Ibrahim, at the time, had agreed that Plateau will hand over a total of 13 properties to the newly formed state.
Nasarawa state had asked the court to direct Plateau state to not only hand over all title and documents to the property, but also asked for an order of perpetual injunction that will stop Plateau state agents and officers from entering into or disturbing the peace at any of properties, including the government house.
Fabiyi said, “In my opinion, it is not right for the defendant (Plateau) to attempt to back out from the agreement in Exhibit NAS 4. The defendant cannot retrace its steps in the prevailing circumstances,” adding that “the plaintiff (Nasarawa) has directly by evidence and the applicable laws proved the case properly against the defendant.”
Plateau state Attorney-General, Mr. Edward Pwajok, told reporters that Jang is now at the Rayfield Government House, but emphasized that he did not “relocate” there.
“He simply works from Rayfield Government House, which was not shut down for all the time government was run from Jishe. The two locations belong to Plateau and government transactions have always been from both locations,” he said.
