Spanish doctor kidnapped in Enugu is freed

A Spanish doctor kidnapped in the southeast city of Enugu was released and found on Friday night, police officials confirmed on Saturday.

According to Sahara Reporters, security operatives picked up Dr. Jose Machimbarrena around “Thinkers Corner” in Enugu city.

Sources said the kidnappers released the doctor, who was abducted on April 4, following discussions between the kidnapper and Spanish Embassy in Nigeria.

Gunmen kidnapped Machimbarrena from his home in southeastern Nigeria, a region where several foreigners have been seized for ransom in the past few years, Reuters reported.

A spokesman at the Spanish Foreign Ministry confirmed the freeing of Machimbarrena, who has been living in Nigeria since 1978. He is reportedly in good health, but there is no word as to whether a ransom was paid.

Enugu police spokesman Ebere Amaraizu also confirmed the doctor’s release in a statement and said “state police command has intensified its manhunt in the pursuit of the hoodlums who took him.”
