Top Nigerian artist D’Banj, who recently severed ties with the Mo’Hits family, has signed on to the British Mercury Records, as listed on their site.
Mercury Records is a subsidiary of Universal Music Group and also acts as a distributor for works produced by Island Def Jam Music Group, outside the US.
There are reports that contract could be a distribution deal and not a recording artist.
The label is set to re-release the track “Oliver Twist”, produced by Mo’Hits CEO Don Jazzy, in London on 14 May. The music video for the track was released weeks ago and featured cameos from a number of artists including G.O.O.D Music label boss, Kanye West, who signed the singer last year in June.
The “Oliver Twist” singer’s recent public and somewhat messy break up from friend and former producer, Mo’Hits boss Michael “Don Jazzy” Collins was confirmed earlier this year and had left loyal fans divided.
D’Banj’s signing with the Kanye’s label and Mercury Records opens global doors for the Nigerian musician.
