Bauchi state police have arrested and charged six suspects who they allege stole N9 million of public workers’ salary
The money was meant for the payment of the March salaries of workers of Katagum Local Government Council in the state, NAN reported.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Baba Hussaini, told the court that the suspects, all staff of the council’s accounts department, had collected over N9 million to pay the workers, but had kept it in a safe where it was stolen instead.
They were arraigned in a Bauchi magistrate court before Isa Mohammed and charged with criminal conspiracy, theft, house break and negligence.
The accused persons all pleaded not guilty to the charges. Their counsel, Patrick Owoicho, request that the court release them on bail.
Hussaini opposed the bail application, adding that they may tamper with the investigation. He said that the suspects were unable to give any satisfactory explanation to the police on their action.
The chief magistrate granted the suspects bail in the sum of N200, 000 each and a surety each in like sum.
He said that the sureties must be the Ward Head where each of the suspects resides, who must write an undertaking to produce the suspect any time the court request for their appearance.
The sureties are also expected to own a certified landed property, with a market value of not less than N1 million within the court’s jurisdiction and two passport photographs.
The case was adjourned till May 8, for further mention.
