The shocking death of Tanzanian actor Steven Kanumba could have been a crime of passion, reports say.
The late beloved star’s girlfriend, actress Elizabeth Michael Kimemeta, also known as Lulu, has been charged with first degree murder as the star is believed to have pushed her boyfriend to his death during a particularly heated tiff between the two lovebirds.
According to the Citizen, police had secretly whisked the teenage star into the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam earlier this week.
She was reportedly composed as she listened to the charges leveled against her.
Kanumba, 28, died on 7 April in Sinza Vatican when he fell in his room, believed to have been pushed by his girlfriend, Lulu. He had been rushed to the hospital in his unconscious state and there was pronounced dead.
Lulu, 17, has been questioned and is facing charges in connection to the actor’s untimely demise. The actress was not allowed to enter a plea at the court since it doesn’t have jurisdiction to hear murder cases, but she will be transferred to a High Court where she will enter her plea.
State attorney Elizabeth Kaganda asked that the case be adjourned allowing for further investigation by police.
Lulu will appear in court again on 23 April. If found guilty, the teen actress could get the death sentence.
Fondly dubbed “The Great”, Kanumba’s death was mourned by fans in Tanzania and across the continent.
Some 20,000 fans, including Tanzania’s first lady, Salma Kikwete, and Vice President Dr. Mohamed Gharib Bilal, attended the star’s funeral.
Kanumba was laid to rest in Kinondoni cemetery.
