Video: Boko Haram vows to “devour” Jonathan in three months

Imam Abubakar Shekau, spiritual leader of the radical sect Jama’atu Ahl-Sunnati Lil Da’awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram, has stated that President Goodluck Jonathan is incapable of putting an end to its reign of terror by June, as the President had publicly vowed.

During his March visit to South Korea, the President had addressed the nation’s growing insecurity challenges and assured that problems posed by the Boko Haram sect will be over by the middle of the year.

“In terms of security challenges, we have some parts of the country where we have terrorist attacks, but it does not affect the whole country. We are in reasonable control. We have the belief that in the middle of this year; in terms of security of individuals, we will have full control. The danger is limited to some parts of the country. It does not extend to other parts of country,” Jonathan assured in an interview with South Korean press agency last month.

However, sect spiritual leader, Shekau, responded with a boast to the contrary. Flanked on either side by several armed militants, Imam Shekau vowed to “devour” Jonathan’s administration in three months.

The message was delivered in both Arabic and Hausa languages by Shekau himself, reading from printed text.

He said: “You Jonathan cannot stop us like you boasted, instead we will devour you in the three months like you are boasting. If death is your worldly gain, for us, it is eternal victory to die working for Allah. Our joy is to die in Jihad for Allah against infidels like you…”

In the grim statement, the spiritual sect leader said that some attacks carried out were falsely attributed to the sect, but said “we will say nothing, but let them continue. They will meet Allah in the last day”.

The sect has claimed responsibility for some major terrorist acts, including the deadly multiple bomb blasts in Kano earlier this year that claimed over 185 lives in one day of mayhem. According to human rights groups, the sect has claimed over 1,000 lives in several attacks.

Boko Haram, which loosely translated means “western education is wrong”, is known to target security and police agents in their attacks, as well as specific attacks on religious institutions, such as the Christmas Day bombings that claimed over 40 lives last year.

Shekau in his message claimed the work to be in service of Allah and will continue. “We are not boasting, rather keeping quiet and working for Allah,” he said.

It is the third audio/video message the sect has posted on the internet this year.
