Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members shot and killed an unidentified police inspector seen shopping at Maiduguri’s Gamboru market on Wednesday.
Traders, eye witnesses to the murder, described the two gunmen as teen-aged boys who they say had pretended to be shopping as well before carrying out the gruesome crime in the middle of the afternoon.
According to reports, the gunmen had trailed the inspector when he left his office around 3:30 p.m. and followed him to the Gamboru market.
“Unknown to him, the boys were following him closely until they got to a shop by the corner where it was convenient for them to shoot him,” a trader, speaking anonymously, said.
The victim had been shot at close range and his assailants had fled in different directions to avoid capture. Spokesman of the Borno State police command, Samuel Tizhe, said an investigation in the murder of the police inspector is ongoing.
Police officers are also investigating the killings of two civilians who were gunned down near Maiduguri’s Premier Cinema on Tuesday.
