Sub Saharan pay-TV operator DStv is introducing a 3.5-inch DVB-H handheld device to view its mobile TV service in Nigeria.
The ‘Walka’ device, already available in South Africa, now enables subscribers to the DStv Mobile service in ten Nigerian cities – Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Ibadan, Enugu, Benin, Onitsha, Aba and Asaba – to view 15 channels on the move. It is reportedly on sale locally for N17,500.
“Existing DStv subscribers who are currently on premium bouquet will enjoy the service free of charge after purchasing the device,” said Mayo Okunola, general manager of Digital Mobile Television Nigeria.
Remaining DStv subscribers, or people who want to sign up for the service, can reportedly choose either a mini package of 11 channels for N680 per month or maxi package of 14 channels for N1,680 per month.
The launch of Walka underlines the vision of Multichoice’s DStv to “surround television viewers with compelling content anywhere”, according to John Ugbe, managing director, MultiChoice Nigeria.
The General Manager of SuperSport Nigeria, Felix Awogu, told Biztech Africa: “This device couldn’t have come at a better time for sports lovers in the country especially with the Africa Cup of Nations, UEFA Champions League, Euro Cup and the Olympics all taking place this year.”
